Shipibo Traditional Ceremony
An encounter with ancestral healing in Taray
The Shipibo-Konibo people of the Peruvian Amazon have preserved one of the most profound healing traditions of the rainforest. Their ceremonies are sacred spaces where song, prayer, and plants come together to restore harmony between body, mind, and spirit.
At the heart of this lineage are the íkaros — healing chants that transmit the vibrational energy of the plants. During the ceremony, the healer sings to each participant individually, weaving melodies that cleanse, align, and awaken. The smoke of mapacho (sacred tobacco) is used to purify and protect, anchoring the energy of the space and guiding the process with clarity and strength.
The Experience
Held in the highlands of Taray (10 min from Pisac), surrounded by mountains and silence, Espacio Ruka Pillan offers an intimate and safe environment for this traditional ceremony. Each encounter unfolds as a complete ritual of purification, connection, and integration — guided by Maestra Bawan Biri and accompanied by Sebastián Newentun.
5:00 PM — Flower Bath
A ritual of cleansing and blessing that harmonizes the subtle body and opens the heart, setting the intention for the ceremony.
6:00–7:00 PM — Rapé Circle and Tobacco Cleansing
The evening continues with a Rapé circle — a sacred snuff used to focus the mind and clear the senses. The Maestra then performs a tobacco cleansing with mapacho smoke, invoking protection and grounding for each participant.
Shipibo Healing Ceremony
As night falls, the ceremony unfolds through íkaros, prayer, and silence. Each participant receives personalized songs — an ancient way of listening, diagnosing, and healing through vibration.
During the night, Sebastián Newentun brings medicine songs and guitar, creating a bridge between ancestral sound and contemporary resonance.
Integration Circle and Rest
Toward dawn, a circle of integration allows participants to share experiences, anchor insights, and rest. Those who wish may stay overnight at Ruka Pillan, giving space for the body and spirit to settle gently.
A Private and Personal Space
These are private or semi-private sessions (1–3 participants), held in an environment of care and respect. This setting allows the Maestra to attend to each process individually, preserving the depth and intimacy of the tradition.
About Maestra Bawan Biri

Born into a revered lineage of Shipibo healers from the Peruvian Amazon, Maestra Bawan Biri carries the living memory of her elders — guardians of sacred knowledge and keepers of the ancient songs that weave healing into the world. From childhood, she was immersed in the rhythms of the forest, learning to recognize the language of plants, the whispers of the rivers, and the subtle presence of the spirits that inhabit nature.
Guided with patience and discipline, she underwent her initiation through sacred plant diets, cultivating a deep relationship with the medicinal forces of the rainforest. This early apprenticeship shaped her vocation as a curandera, a woman dedicated to restoring balance and guiding others through processes of transformation and renewal.
For more than two decades, she has walked this path with unwavering devotion, sharing the ancestral ways of her people through traditional Shipibo ceremonies. In her work, the healing songs — íkaros — arise as luminous threads that cleanse, protect, and awaken the inner light of those who receive them. Each song is born in communion with the plants, carrying the vibration of wisdom, clarity, and love.
Her presence is serene and grounded, reflecting the discipline of a lifetime devoted to service and prayer. Through her ceremonies, Maestra Bawan Biri transmits not only the medicine of the forest but also the essence of an ancient worldview where all beings are interconnected.
Today, she continues to share this lineage with authenticity and humility, inviting each participant to remember their own connection to spirit, to nature, and to the infinite intelligence that sustains life.
